One of my goals for this year was to read more. As a child all I ever did was read, I’d sneak books to bed and hide them under my pillow. I’d even read most of Charles Dickens work by the age of 12 but over the years I’ve found less and less time for reading. This year I have a peaceful, quiet commute to university and I am trying to step away from being on my phone before bed so this is the perfect time to begin reading again.
All of these books are second hand; from eBay, amazon or charity shops as I don’t tend to buy brand new books.
The first book is a Jodi Picoult book that I purchased in an Oxfam shop, it cost £1.99. I absolutely adore Jodi Picoult (she wrote My Sister’s Keeper) and I try to read everything she publishes. This book is about a mother who does everything she can to help her son who has been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, until he is charged with murder.
Another book I picked up in Oxfam (also for £1.99) was Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen. I haven’t seen the movie yet as I’m waiting until after I’ve finished the book but so far it’s been an interesting read. The book is about an 18 year old who finds herself in a psychiatric hospital on a ward with other teen girls after visiting a psychiatrist she’s never seen before. She ends up being in the hospital for 2 years. I’m excited to see where this books goes.
My next purchase was Staying Strong by Demi Lovato, this was from eBay and it cost £4 including delivery. This book concentrates on her recovery and has a page for everyday that includes a quote, a goal and a personal reflection. I think this book is going to be quite inspiring so I am looking forward to reading this.
My next two books I actually took from Gran’s pile that were going to the charity shop. The first one is a murder mystery book called Cage of Bones, by Tania Carver. This is about a serial killer who leaves a boy in a cage with bones of other children, the cage and boy are discovered in a building that’s due to be demolished. I do quite enjoy a murder mystery book and I like this author’s writing style
The second book was another murder mystery, it’s called Close your Eyes and is by Michael Robotham. This book is about a mother and teenage daughter that are murdered but the crime is linked to other attacks in the town. I’ve never read anything by this author so it’ll be a refreshing read.
This next book is one that I’ve actually just borrowed from the library at University. It’s called Contagious and is by Jonah Berger. This is all about why some products get attention over others and how social influence shapes everything we purchase. I felt that this would be an interesting read not only as a marketing student but as a blogger. I’ll probably post a review about this one as it’s the one I’m most excited to read!
My last two purchases were from amazon. The first one I purchased was Sarah Millican’s (an English comedian) autobiography, How To Be Champion. She has written this book to show that not everything in life has to be perfect and despite the struggles you can still become successful. I really like Sarah Millican and I just know this book is going to have me laughing the whole way through.
The other book from amazon hasn’t arrived yet (it’s due on Monday) but it is #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso. This book is all about how Sophia built a 250 million dollar company that has over 400 employees. This book really appealed to the marketing student side of me and it seems so popular in the blogging world (I see it constantly in flat lays). However the reason I purchased this was because I read Rachel’s blog post about it! You can find her post here as it really explains why it is worth a read.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this post and have maybe found a book that interests you. Let me know what you are currently reading!
