Discover Dundee for under £60.

This post is in collaboration with megabus. megabus are launching new coaches on their London to Aberdeen route, so why not stop off in Dundee and see Scotland’s upcoming city.

I’m not originally from Dundee, I moved here for uni 2 years ago and have spent that time getting to know the city. The best way to make somewhere feel more like home is to get out and explore so here are things in Dundee I feel are worth seeing.

We’ll start at the City Quay.

At the City Quay, you will find the HMS Unicorn and Foxlake Adventures.

HMS Unicorn

HMS Unicorn is Scotland’s only preserved warship. It is one of the 6 oldest ships in the world and the last ship left in the world to have survived almost completely as she was built.

For a family ticket, it will cost you £16 to go onboard. This is something that is just a bit different from your typical museum.

Foxlake Adventures

For the more adventurous out there, Foxlake Adventures is also located here. From the photos, you can see the aqua park, this is only open in summer and I haven’t been myself as I’m scared of open water. That being said I’ve heard good things and it does look really fun. It’s £14 for children and £16 for adults for a 50-minute session with all the kit included.

They also offer wakeboarding, paddleboarding and Ringo rides. I’ll definitely be considering this one for summer next year.

From the city quay, take a walk alongside the River Tay and you will find yourself at the V&A.

V&A Dundee

The V&A in Dundee is Scotland’s first Design Museum and the only V&A museum outwith London. This was still being built when I moved to Dundee and I have never heard of so many people talk about one building before.

It’s easy to see why it was so spoken about, the building really stands out against the skyline.

The V&A is free to enter, they always have free exhibitions but they do also run a paid exhibition. Currently, this is the Hello, Robot exhibition. Tickets are between £6 – £12, I went to the press preview for this exhibition and it is well worth the money!

Hello, Robot is running from November until February and features the original R2D2 alongside more interactive exhibitions.

One thing that you might miss upstairs in the V&A is the viewing point. They have a little balcony area where you can sit and look across the River Tay.

From the V&A, take a walk into the city centre where you will find The McManus.

The McManus

A stand out building in the middle of Dundee’s city centre.

This is Dundee’s art gallery and museum. It is free to visit and has 8 galleries to explore across two floors. From the Victoria Gallery that has historic paintings from 1750-1914 to the Making of Modern Dundee which explores the successes of the city and it’s people.

As for food in Dundee, we have some of the typical chain restaurants such as Nandos, Frankie and Benny’s and Five Guys. However, my favourite thing about Dundee is how many independent restaurants and cafe’s there are.

Wee Mexico

The restaurant that every new student is recommended to visit. This is my favourite place for a takeaway or a quick bite. We have taken everyone from home here and they have all loved it. Every time I visit home my brother asks me to bring him a burrito.

Wee Mexico is all about ethical, local & fair food. There is something on the menu for everyone and they are great with allergens and alternatives. I love their Vegan burritos as it honestly tastes the same as the regular burrito. Nick is gluten-free and the staff are always so helpful in making sure there is no cross-contamination. A meal deal here is only £7.50.

Wee Slice

Moving further up Perth Road we have a hip-hop pizza shop. Wee Slice is run by the same team that brought us Wee Mexico and like Wee Mexico, all the ingredients are locally sourced and they offer alternatives.

Pizza here is served by the slice from 20″ pizzas. This is great if you want to try a few different ones and the slices are priced from £3.50 – £4.50. If you have a big group you can custom build a 20″ pizza starting at £14.

Wee Slice also has a bar if you fancy a pizza and a pint.

Continuing up Perth Road we reach Crolla’s Gelataria.

If you are looking for some treats, Crolla’s is the place to go. They have so many ice cream flavours that change seasonally, they have their staples but I love that I can choose a different flavour every time. My favourite ice cream flavour has to be the tango ice blast. Crolla’s is so affordable with kid’s ice cream cone prices starting at £1.30.

They offer waffles, cookie dough, milkshakes but you can also have ‘proper’ food in Crolla’s, the paninis are amazing! This is such a cosy space to have a bite to eat with friends or family.

Moving back to the City Square

If you are looking for somewhere to have a proper sit down 3-course meal this is the place to go in Dundee.

Italian Grill

This is one of our favourite places for a nice dinner out, right in the city centre. I have previously worked with them so you can find my full review here.

The menu offers a good variety of food including pizza, a grill and fresh egg pasta that is made fresh daily.

They cater to different dietary requirements, there are very few things on the menu that aren’t gluten-free and they also offer vegan mozzarella.

Escape the city and head for the beach.

Yes, you read that right. The beach! Dundee is actually Scotland’s sunniest city so even in winter I love taking a little trip to the beach.

Broughty Ferry beach is only 5 miles away from Dundee city centre. I love that although I live in a city, I can be at the beach within 15 minutes!
